The NocturneBusiness meets everyday life

A day inside The Nocturne

How the shop’s management decisions belong inside the movie.

The Nocturne / inside the experience

The shop has a rhythm.

Take stock

Begin with the shop around you.

The business has staff, supplies, and a continuing state. Checking the shop gives decisions a context.

The bet gives the year a shape

A businessman wagers one dollar that the new owner cannot reach $100,000 in net profit within one year. That challenge gives everyday decisions a longer horizon.

Supplies, staffing, and improvements to the shop are part of a business with a continuing state. The goal is not a series of disconnected coffee-making scenes.

Choose where the decision lives

The Nocturne’s design uses the setting to determine how a choice is presented. A people decision can arrive in conversation. A purchase can appear on an appropriate screen within the shop.

Voice and click or tap interaction support that approach. It keeps the player’s attention on the people, objects, and tasks that make up the experience.

There is room to do nothing

A film that can keep moving does not have to stop at every opportunity. Declining to engage is itself a valid response in the design, allowing the shop’s life to continue.

Busy and quiet periods, changing times of day, and stories woven through normal business give the project its reality-TV character. The intended result is a management game that feels lived in.
